Few things bring out Islamophobia like an election campaign and dog-whistle politics. Sadly, there is nothing new about political candidates pandering to racist constituents, in Quebec and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a fiercely proud Quebec-born, Canadian Muslim woman, I am disgusted that a member of a political party in Quebec City has compared Islam to cancer ahead of the Nov. 7 municipal elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We should not be subjected to this kind of vitriol against the Muslim community in our provincial capital less than five years after they had to bury six worshippers following one of the worst acts of terrorism on Canadian soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In case you missed it, Alain Giasson, who is running for mayor, said he believes Boufeldja Benabdallah, the former president of the mosque where the mass shooting took place \u2014 and who is now running for council for an opposing party \u2014 is promoting the Islamization of the provincial capital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such comments must not be tolerated. And yet the province\u2019s elections commission says it does not have the power to do anything about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is nothing in our laws that says if a person makes statements of such nature, his candidacy is withdrawn,\u201d spokesperson Julie St-Arnaud was quoted as saying. \u201cIt is up to the voters to make their choices when the time comes on the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, I say if the commission doesn\u2019t have the power to do anything about it, then maybe it should be given that power. If \u201cthere is nothing in our laws\u201d that would force such a candidate to withdraw, then maybe the laws should be changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wonder: What if another group was the target of Giasson\u2019s venom? Would the result be the same? Or would there be a public outcry calling for immediate action?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the record, Giasson included these words on his party platform: \u201cIslam is contrary to fundamental Quebec values. Islam is a cancer that is slowly growing inside Quebec society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, you see, he has it all wrong. The cancer growing inside Quebec society is the hate that\u2019s directed at \u201cthe other\u201d \u2014 those who do not look like the majority, practise their faith like the majority, or dress like the majority. That is the cancer that must be excised from our society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When someone who is seeking such a lofty position as mayor can use such vile and disgusting language towards a faith practised by nearly 2 billion people worldwide and get away with it, I say we have a problem with our political oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, it is up to ordinary Quebecers who believe in peaceful coexistence, who celebrate our differences, and who build bridges among different communities to speak loudly and clearly to drown out the ugly sound of hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was heartened to see a letter to the editor in the Montreal Gazette on Thursday by Bruce Myers, the Anglican bishop of Quebec, describing Giasson\u2019s position and that of his fringe party \u201cIslamophobic and dangerous\u201d and \u201cgrounded in ignorance and fear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about it: When was the last time a white, male candidate was ever questioned about his faith and how he would use his position in office to propagate it? That\u2019s right, never. So in what world would it be acceptable now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elected officials should be working to bring different communities together in good times and bad \u2014 not seeking to divide them using denigrating and inflammatory language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six people were killed and five others were seriously wounded in that attack after evening prayers at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City on Jan. 29, 2017. Families of the victims and survivors still reside in that city. And this man dares speak in this way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
