Hasbro, the company behind My Little Pony, Lite-Brite, and Furbies, has expanded into the world of gangster rap.

According to Rolling Stone, the toy and board game brand is now the unlikely owner of Death Row Records, the storied West Coast imprint that launched the careers of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Daz Dillinger, and more. Hasbro reportedly acquired Death Row’s discography with the $4 billion purchase of Entertainment One, a multimedia company that has its hands in TV, film, and music. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1etyu3jAUm/embed/captioned/?cr=1&v=12&wp=1190&rd=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.complex.com&rp=%2Fmusic%2F2019%2F08%2Fdeath-row-records-now-owned-by-hasbro#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A630068.6000000238%2C%22ls%22%3A629773.8000000119%2C%22le%22%3A630006.3000000119%7D

As pointed out by Rolling Stone, eOne became Death Row’s parent company when it bought the label’s catalog for approximately $280 million in 2013, about seven years after Death Row declared bankruptcy.

« The acquisition of eOne adds beloved story-led global family brands that deliver strong operating returns to Hasbro’s portfolio and provides a pipeline of new brand creation driven by family-oriented storytelling, » Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner said in a statement.

« Family-oriented storytelling »? It’s unclear if Goldner is aware that many Death Row projects come with a Parental Advisory label.

My Little Pony, meet Tupac Shakur.

Toymaker Hasbro has acquired gangster rap label Death Row Records — which counts Shakur and Snoop Dogg among its artists — as part of a bid to grow its stable of family-friendly entertainment.

The worldwide toymaker announced the $4 billion deal Thursday to buy British company Entertainment One UK:ETO  , which produces animated kids shows such as “Peppa Pig” and “PJ Masks” but also owns the rap label.

Hasbro HAS, +0.61%  , which owns the rights to My Little Pony, Monopoly and Mr. Potato Head, has said the company was looking to expand “family brands” and television production with the purchase.

“The acquisition of eOne adds beloved story-led global family brands that deliver strong operating returns to Hasbro’s portfolio and provides a pipeline of new brand creation driven by family-oriented storytelling,” Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner said in a statement.

Though Hasbro was aiming for more family-friendly programming, the toymaker ended up with Death Row Records, a division of Entertainment One purchased in 2013, Rolling Stone reported.

Death Row — which was founded in 1991 by Suge Knight, The D.O.C., and Dr. Dre — was one of hip-hop’s most influential labels, signing some of the biggest names on the West Coast.

The iconic label, however, filed for bankruptcy in 2006 after a series of lawsuits and the imprisonment of Knight. It has since changed hands several times, landing up with Entertainment One when it was bought for $280 million, according to Rolling Stone.

                    • Rusty Slade25 August, 2019Hasbro can easily divest itself of the label, or close it down if it is a money loser, thereby offsetting the cost of acquiring “Peppa Pig” and “PJ Masks” . Although the article is interesting from a family values v.s. Death Row records perspective, my guess is that they will sell that side of the business because nobody at Hasbro is qualified to be in that space.

Here’s why Hasbro Toys now owns Death Row Records

Ever since news broke that Hasbro Toys is the proud owner of Death Row Records, folks are wondering how on earth that happened.

At first glance, the notion that the same company that brought us Monopoly, Mr. Potato Head, and Power Rangers now owns the infamous record label that was built by Suge Knight sounds preposterous, but the backstory isn’t as crazy as it seems.

Suge Knight sentenced to 28 years in prison after reaching plea deal in murder case

Hasbro recently purchased Entertainment One Multimedia Company (eOne) for $4 billion. One of the media company’s many holdings includes their music labels, and eOne purchased Death Row Records for $280 million back in 2013.

Now that eOne has been acquired by Hasbro Toys, Death Row Records is part of their expansive portfolio.

One is responsible for popular children’s brands including Peppa Pig while eOne’s music division has been home to several artists you likely know and love including Erica Campbell, Michelle Williams, and any more.

While it’s unlikely that any new music will come out of Death Row Records, only time will tell if we will see Snoop Dogg and Tupac action figures lining the toy aisles in the future.
